Frequently asked questions

WHAT KIND OF TRIPS CAN BE TAKEN BY E-BIKE?

Any trip under 10 miles that you would normally take by car. Commuting to work, school drop-offs, grocery runs…the list goes on.

WHAT EVIDENCE IS THERE THAT E-BIKES REPLACE CAR TRIPS?

A comprehensive 2018 study of e-bike users in Portland, OR showed that e-bikes replaced 45% of commuting trips and 30.1% of personal errands that would have otherwise been made by car. That’s huge potential for modeshift.

HOW IS ECP ACCESS DIFFERENT THAN OTHER E-BIKE INCENTIVE PROGRAMS? WHY IS IT NEEDED?

While subsidy programs are successful in encouraging e-bike uptake, they often fail to reach those who are not already plugged into e-bike culture. The ECP includes community outreach and distribution through employers to ensure subsidies reach New Yorkers who could benefit the most, as well as a low-cost loan program to cover the remaining cost of an e-bike.

HOW DO WE KNOW PEOPLE WANT E-BIKES?

ECP surveying in the Bronx found that 82% of people would be interested in trying an e-bike for commuting.

WHAT ABOUT WINTER?

Research has shown that people choose e-bikes over traditional bicycles in winter conditions. Also, some of the most bike-friendly cities in the world, like Copenhagen and Stockholm, are located in cold climates.
